The Cup Technique Preparation Instructions
| Step 1 |
Take a crown impression
using the crown impression technique of your choice. |
| Note |
To supply the laboratory with an accurate bite registration,
you may need to take an additional impression with the partial
in place |
| Step 2 |
Fabricate a light cured composite coping over the crown prep.
The coping should be uniform in thickness without any lobes
and it should extend down to the margins of the crown prep. |
| Note: |
Please be certain that the coping is not short of the margins,
and not overextended. |
| Step 3: |
With the coping properly seated on the prepped tooth, re-insert
the partial. Make sure there is at least 1mm clearance between
the coping and the clasp, all around the coping. |
| Note: |
At this point, make any necessary adjustments on the coping. |
| Step 4: |
Apply a tray adhesive over the coping and place it back into
the patient's mouth. Using an automix cartridge of polyvinyl
siloxane bite registration material, express the impression
material over the coping, stacking it approximately 16-20mm
high. |
| Note: |
The polyvinyl bite registration material that you use should
be soft in consistency when expressed but should become quite
rigid when set up. Make sure that your tray adhesive is compatible
with the light cured composite coping and the polyvinyl bite
registration material used so that you achieve proper adhesion
between the coping and the bite registration. |
| Step 5: |
Immediately after expressing the bite registration material
over the coping, place the partial back in the patient's mouth,
making sure it is seated properly with all clasps in place
and all rests completely down. |
| Note: |
It is important to avoid letting the patient bite down on
the partial as it could distort or displace the partial. We
recommend holding the partial down with light finger pressure. |
| Step 6: |
After the impression has set up, remove the partial and you
will find that the pick up impression and the coping will adhere
to the clasp of the partial. Taking a Bart Parker blade, carefully
cut away the impression material exposing the top part of the
clasp. |
| Step 7: |
Remove the pick up impression and examine it to make sure
that the rests and clasp have been picked up and are clearly
visible. |
| Step 8: |
Send the coping with the impression of the rests and clasp
still adhered to it to the laboratory for fabrication of the
crown. |
